Vacation Day 3: Washington D.C.

On day 3 of our vacation we left Baltimore and headed toward Washington D.C.  Jule and Connie were in charge of getting us there.  They figured out how to buy train tickets and which train to catch to go from one city to the other.  We rode the MARC train from the BWI airport to Union Station and then took a taxi from the station to our hotel.

We arrived and settled at our hotel around 3:00 in the afternoon.  We were hungry, so we set out on foot to find a decent restaurant.  We walked to Logan Tavern where Jule had her first French Onion Soup.  (I'm pretty sure this was her first time having it.)

After we returned, we decided to walk to my favorite bakery.  On the way, we ran into an interesting clothing store with a cool vibe called the Buffalo Exchange.  The girls wanted to go in, and it was a great store!  It sold used clothes (or, we say "vintage" clothes to make it seem better.)  But the clothes in here were special.  You could tell that they were very careful with the things that they take in.  We spent about 30 minutes "oohing" an "ahhing" over the cool stuff in there.  Both girls bought a piece of clothing there.  Jule got a Banana Republic jacket and Connie took home some odd looking skeleton shoes.

So, we reached the bakery just before it started raining.  The bakery is sugar heaven.  It's called Crumb's Bake Shop... and oh my... it's delicious.

By the time we returned from Crumb's, I was tired.  I took a nap while Jule and Connie played on the internet and ate some snacks.  When I woke up, I was ready to go!  We decided to walk around the city at night, but we changed our plans once we noticed the bike rentals just outside our hotel!  This is such a great idea, and I'm sure it's common in larger cities, but I had never seen a "bike share" like this one.

We rented our bikes and began riding around the city.  This was my favorite part of the trip.  Seeing Washington DC at night is awesome, and these bikes allowed us to get around easily, especially since there was nobody on the sidewalks at night.  We biked for about two hours around the city, and here were some of the things we saw...

The Lincoln Memorial
IN THIS TEMPLE
AS IN THE HEARTS OF THE PEOPLE
FOR WHOM HE SAVED THE UNION
THE MEMORY OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN
IS ENSHRINED FOREVER
World War II Memorial
Well, you can't see it here but Jule's pants were ripped open on the rear from the bike ride.
I laughed so hard that my stomach hurt!
We didn't have a specific place that we were riding when we began our nighttime bike ride.  We knew only the right direction to go and we started pedaling.  We spotted a guy (looked like police, but he wasn't wearing a police uniform) standing near a sidewalk and we stopped to ask him why there was so much police presence in the area.  (I thought that maybe the President was on his way or something.)  He pointed directly behind us... then we turned around to see that we had rode right past The White House.

Here is a map of some of the places that we went while on foot / bike / metro / bus.

We walked approximately 10 miles (16 kilometers) while in DC.
This is a map of the metro.
We learned how to buy tickets, get to the right platforms, and get off at the right stops.

After biking for two hours, we returned to the hotel and ate cupcakes before bed!  :)
